What is pelvic inflammatory disease?

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) refers to infection of the female reproductive organs. It can scar the tubes that carry eggs from the ovary to the uterus which can lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic pain and other problems.
