What is nontuberculous mycobacteria?

Nontuberculous mycobacteria is an infection caused by atypical mycobacteria; this type of organism does not cause tuberculosis (TB). Immunocompromised patients or those with a suppressed immune system are at an increased risk for developing nontuberculous mycobacteria.
