What is patent ductus arteriosus?

Patent ductus arteriosus is a disorder in the heart of a newborn when the ductus arteriosus (DA) fails to close after birth. Normally, the DA is substantially closed within 12–24 hours after birth. Persistence of this opening beyond 10 days of life is considered abnormal.
