Advice & Tips: Work has definitely helped me, especially in the role I play-peer support specialist (working with other severely mentally ill people). It's very rewarding and I like it. I'm sometimes frustrated, always distant inside my head, and usually go home totally exhausted-because whatever I do-even laying in bed those 5 years ;> ) -I do with everything I've got. It's like I'm obsessed. I work much more than I'm paid for, much of it at home. But it's changed my life.

Advice & Tips: I can do my work up to a point, but then I enter a bubble and everything is far away. I don't know what to do at work at that point. I can do so much and then I'm lost. This is because of the Asperger's. I'm actually good at what I do. I'm in the process of setting up my own similar business (psychosocial rehab facility). I wasn't expecting such major benefits. Shortly before I was hired (I'm a certified peer support specialist) I was quite low functioning. I was in bed most of the time. People can hardly believe that. I like my job. Work has had a major impact. I've got something to get up for and I've got something that takes my mind off myself. Helping other people is very healing.

Advice & Tips: I work for the Dutch IRS. If I go to work, I sit behind my desk and computer and often forget that I have this disease. Many collegues come to have a chat with me, so it takes my mind of ALS. Also it gives my caregiver a few hours free time every morning.
