Advice & Tips:
Try and drink lots of water in the few hours before you take it as it gives you a dry mouth. While it does not make you fall asleep, when you do sleep it puts you in a very deep sleep. It is difficult to wake up in the morning as well. You just keep drifting off! I used to sleep 11pm-7am on weekends. Now I sleep till 9am or even 10am sometimes. That is a good thing though if you wake up at 5am some mornings worrying.

Advice & Tips:
It helps me with my sleep, before I was taking Zolpiedem to help me sleep, but I was doing things that I could not remember doing, and it was kind of scary. It took a little while to get the dosage right, but it seems to be working for the depression and with my insomnia.

Advice & Tips:
When I first began this medication it would help me sleep or rather help me feel sleepy. It no longer does that for me, even after the increase. I know it has helped my depression, I was on the verge of suicide before the increase. Now I am more positive and I feel better, if only it would help me sleep. The dry mouth is constant, I have become accustomed to it, I keep hard candy around, to me it helps with stimulating saliva.

Advice & Tips:
When I first started the medication I had horrible dry mouth. I solved it by chewing gum, it seemed to stimulate the saliva. I am also drinking half a pot of coffe to wake up in the morning, which I don't really care to do, but I have to work so I do what I have to do. Also I am taking the generic which I get at walmart because of the $4 dollar deal which this medicine actually cost me $3.83 a month!

Advice & Tips:
I experienced depression when I titrated up to 200 mg on the Lamictal XR which made me pretty useless and wasn't going away so I called my doctor and asked him for some Zoloft which worked wonders for me in the past. Imagine my surprise when he instead called in a precription for the generic form of Elavil.
AWFUL medication!!! Worsened my depression, constant dry mouth, made me want to sleep all the time, caused me to be angry all the time.
Caused me to have a couple of myoclonic seizures; that was enough for me. Titrated myself off the medicine. Did some research on it; found out that the tricyclic antidepressants actually tend to have more probability of causing seizures than do the SSRI's. The neurologist is probably going to be upset I took myself off the medicine, but I'd rather be depressed than live with the side effects of Elavil.
Advice to anyone who is depressed and wants to try a med to control it--stay away from this drug. It seems to have a great deal of side effects, takes WEEKS to kick in, and can induce seizures even in people who don't have epilepsy.
If I still feel this way when I see the doctor next month, I'll be asking for some Zoloft or other anti-depressant with less evil side effects!
