  • Effectiveness
    Moderate (for factor V Leiden)
  • Effectiveness
    Major (for pulmonary embolism)
  • Side effects
    None
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
Not at all hard to take
Dosage: 7.5 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: If your Dr. (usually a Cardiologist) puts you on this following an episode of finding a clot, BE SURE TO GET THEM TO DO A PROTEIN C & S TEST for Hereditary blood clotting disorder. I DO have the Hypercoaguability disorder because blood clots killed a large number of folks in my mother's family. I'll be on it for the rest of my life. AND be careful of how much greens you eat, especially kale and spinach and if you are a traveler on airplanes or sit a long time, be sure to get up and walk around every 1 to 2 hours! The circulation in your legs is critical for this. Also, drinking cranberry juice can also affect your INR rate. So be careful with that as well.
Cost: < $25 monthly
Side effects: nosebleeds (epistaxis)

  • Effectiveness
    Major (for pulmonary embolism)
  • Effectiveness
    Major (for Prevent blood clotting)
  • Side effects
    Moderate (bruising)
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
Not at all hard to take
Dosage: 2.5 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: While using this medication be VERY careful what you do. Since you bruise so easy and we all know that the bruises hurt, just be careful what you do. You may think you are okay until you wake up the next morning with bruises you aren't sure where they came from. I always felt tired on this medication and lost my breath easy, since being off of it I have been able to do more. So be careful while taking this medication and ALWAYS get your INR checked like your suppose to. Having numbers to high will actually hurt you worse than anything.

  • Effectiveness
    Major (for pulmonary embolism)
  • Effectiveness

  • Effectiveness
    Major (for Prevent blood clotting)
  • Side effects
    Moderate (bruising)
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
    Very hard to take
Dosage: 7.5 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: It is a very cumbersome drug to take as it requires frequent trips to the doctor for lab draws. Dosages are always changing, and sometimes they are so wacky that it's hard to keep track of what to take. (I'm taking 7.5mg, 10mg, 7.5mg, 10mg etc) I bruise a lot with it now.
