Advice & Tips: Whereas some patients prescribed the walking cane may mentally view it as a (literally) burden, sign of dependency, shame, aging, etc; I see it for its necessitated purpose, to improve mobility and balance and to assist in taking the strain off of certain muscles that no longer adhere to the physical demands the user requires to have the independence and mobility necessary to walk and move about freely without incidence and risks of falling, further compromising their independence and possibly being a blow to their dignity.

Nov 19, 2012 (Started Dec 15, 1998)

  • Effectiveness
    Moderate (for hereditary spastic paraplegia)
  • Side effects
    Mild (pain in shoulder(s))
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
    A little hard to take
Dosage: Daily
Advice & Tips: There is no other way to report my having to move to 2 canes in the summer of 2011, as my condition naturally progressed. The effectiveness is moderate- because as long as your condition requires you to have assistance to walk it certainly keeps you upright, but of course other than keeping your usable muscle fibers as strong as possible doesn't affect the disorder itself. In terms of cost, you'd think for equipment they'd give you a one-time price option for permanent devices! These forms can be so frustrating!
