  • Adherence: Always
  • Burden: Somewhat
Advice & Tips: Stay off your feet or support your arm if its a limb that has been affected. In my case it was my ankle I was stung by a nasty wasp. My ankle swelled up to the point I could not walk without a cane. My rheumy had me on Prednisone (my first experience) for about 5-7 days. The swelling went down the next day I was glad it worked so quickly but wanted to hurry up and get of it because of the side affects it can do to some people. I know it takes a longer period for that but why expose myself to a drug that can do that kind of damage? The only thing is the swelling returned after I stopped the drug but it was slight still fairly painful and held a small pocket of fluid for almost 5 wks. Went in for a second round of treatment after feeling the swelling wasn't going down on its own. It didn't change a thing so I stopped taking it after 3 days. My MD wrote me a script for another anti-inflammatory to try, it failed because of a side affect diarrhea but may work for others. Know your drugs even if the meds are in your hands already knowledge is power. I need to add that this sting was very painful and the Prednisone took most of that away overnight just by reducing the bulk of the swelling.

  • Perceived effectiveness for Kidney Transplant: Major
  • Side Effects: Moderate
  • Adherence: Always
  • Burden: Somewhat
Dosage: 100 mg every other day
Advice & Tips: It's not as bad as everyone says! It is easy to gain weight on it, but watching calories helps a lot- you realize you're eating more than you used to and can stop it! Didn't get a huge "moonface" this time around. In fact, it's helped with arthritis.
Side effects: Hunger

  • Perceived effectiveness for Other: Slight
  • Perceived effectiveness for Relapse MS (exacerbation): Slight
  • Side Effects: Mild
  • Adherence: Always
  • Burden: Somewhat
Dosage: 10 mg All the time (24/7)
Advice & Tips: Normally when I get put on a prednisone taper- I feel like super woman- I have more energy than one person can contain (Last time I literally tore my closet down TWICE). This time I did not have that super burst of energy (I sure could have used it)- I was exactly the opposite, I was very lethargic and slept almost 2 full days only getting up to use the restroom and eat (thats the other down side to prednisone, you are hungrier than you have ever been in your entire life- or thats how I feel- I just cant get enough to eat)
Side effects: Weight gain, Increased appetite

Advice & Tips: Be careful to track your moods when you are on this. It threw me right out of control. Some people have a LOT of mood problems on this med. If you already have mood issues and go on it, that could only be worse.

May 7, 1990 (Started Apr 11, 1990)

  • Perceived effectiveness for Transplant rejection prevention: Major
  • Perceived effectiveness for Adrenal insufficiency: Moderate
  • Side Effects: Moderate
  • Adherence: Usually
  • Burden: Somewhat
Dosage: 5 mg every other day
Advice & Tips: I did not realize I would get that much of a different appearance. I was devistated at the age of 16 to go from underweight to the fat kid everyone made fun of. Even my first boyfriend ever left me and my brothers told me it was because of my weight. After that I had not taken it as much as I should have because I become depressed and felt at that time I would rather be skinny and on dialysis and loved than transplanted and fat and lonely. Years later (the 2nd time around) I know that looks are not everything. My weight is still bothersome for me but this time around spending a longer length of time on dialysis I am more grateful for this gift of life and take it. I noticed however that supposedly I don't have my original adrenal glands (original kidneys removed) yet those times without taking Prednisone I did not notice any difference other than lost the moon face and lost my kidney).
Side effects: Moon face, Weight gain
