Advice & Tips: Yesterday, at 5 1/2 years old, our son had rice for the first time. For that reason, I'm considering us off the SCD. We introduced potatoes a while back (which aren't SCD legal), too. He handled those well. We'll monitor the rice. I can't say enough about the SCD. This, along with the ABA therapy, dramatically changed the course of our son's life.

Advice & Tips: First off, this is an incredibly difficult diet. Everything needs to be made from scratch. There is absolutely no grain allowed. No gluten, no dairy, no soy, no wheat, no oats, no barley, no rice, no potatoes, no no quinoa, etc. My son also has other intolerances on top of this, so it's a VERY restrictive diet. No disaccharides. No polysaccharides. What does my son eat? He eats meats (grass fed, uncured, etc.). He eats organic fruits and veggies (we tried hard to get organic but it's not always 100%). His grain replacement is foods made from nut flours. He has several nut intolerances, but he can have almond, pecan, hazelnut, and brazilian nut, so those are the flours we tend to use. It is expensive and very difficult to follow. We are probably about 95% in compliance with the diet. Possibly higher. When we started the diet, my son was non-verbal, had very soft stools, and was often up in the night screaming out in pain or laughing to himself for no reason. Since starting the diet, he's talking (his ABA therapy obviously has a lot to do with that) and his bowel problems have really improved. We'll see some of the symptoms again if he has a stomach bug (as he has recently), but the change in bowels was dramatic. And he's the best sleeper of my three children now.
