Had Emphysma/COPD since 1983-84, smoker for over 40 years but quit cold turkey in 2006. Too late then. On Oxygen for sleeping initially, gradually moved to 24/7 3 lph. Took 3.5 years to get a "clean and clear" CT or CAT or Pet scan, then got referral for evaluation.
Passed the evaluation and was put on waiting list; previous pulmonary doctor told me to be prepared to wait a long time. God intervened and my wait was only 3 months; TX on July 25 2009. Almost aspirated in ICU, but nurses saved me. Spent 10 days in ICU, 18 more in recovery then. Nothing but continual improvment since TX.
Today, Sept 21. 2010, I am in the best condition of my life, and have had NO side effects or consequences since my TX. My 1 yr anniversary check up and broncoscopy in July were all very good, and the dosage of one of my meds was cut in half.
On Aug 25 2010, after 2 months of pain and difficulty walking, I had major back surgery (6 hours) and am now recovering amazingy well. God has chosen to Bless me again.
I am now in a very serious relationship with a wonderful woman, who has Pulmonary Fibrosis, and is being evaliated for a Lung Transplant on Sept 27-28. God willing, she will pass the tests and get put on the list.
She was my caretaker for my first 2 weeks of recovery following my back surgery and performed a great job, being firm about what I could and could not do.
Dec 20 2010- fully recovered from back surgery and working out regularly again.
Feel great, looking forward to a wonderful Christmas
