What is Bipolar type II? It's like one of those names for something, that you don't know what it is, and it shows how little you know about it. Like U.F.O., Unidentified Flying Object... it's the unidentified part, that just screams... "I have no idea what I am talking about". Of course people wonder why the whole psychiatric profession doesn't have more credit, now that neuroscience is actually becoming more respected, but it's names like bipolar disorder that only leave patients scratching there heads and wondering why the psychiatric association doesn't understand that this term only adds to the stigma of having a mental health problem.
Bi, meaning 2, and Polar meaning... well pole. I guess we are supposed to have something sticking out of our heads. So the idea is that each side of this metaphorical pole is supposed to be one part of the depression, and the other for mania.... except for those with mixed episodes; those with less depression and more mania; or those with more depression and less mania.... if your one of those lucky people the psychiatric community doesn't know what do with you because all of a sudden you don't fit neatly into the bipolar construct... so they add a 2... instead of perhaps thinking that they don't understand either disorders, and rename it based on better terminology. Which is like seeing a UFO, then another one that is different, and saying the second one is a UFO type 2. Forget having any knowledge of Aerospace, consulting an experts like NASA or the FAA, who may tell us of these things called airplanes and helicopters lets just come up with our own terminology right?
Placing faith in the people that come up with this stuff, can be a scary prospect, for even the most level headed and healthy brains, let alone one that is faced with the most intense and disorienting feelings and thoughts of it's life.
But, they are all we have... So, best just relax, sit back.... and go along for the ride.
