I'm thrilled to be part of the team at PatientsLikeMe. I've been in the healthcare field for the last 15+ years and have loved every second of it. In the most recent years, I've worked at 2 other health-tech companies where the missions have been to make a positive impact on the patient experience.
Being a patient is hard, everyone is a patient at one point or another - having a place like PLM where we can all come together and share our experiences is amazing.
I've experienced some highs and lows when it comes to being a patient/caregiver. An example of a high was when I was told by my OB that my husband and I were going to be having twins. The team of doctors and nurses who cared for me were amazing. Prenatal care all the way through our dark days in the NICU, the team caring for us and our babies were exceptional. Our boy/girl twins are 7 years old now and thriving.
The lowest low was my time as a caregiver for my mom. She passed away at age 52 from dementia. Being so young she had a hard time getting diagnosed. We had 2 years of jumping from hospital to hospital, from one psychiatric unit to another. It was painful. Navigating through the mental health system was one of the worst experiences of my life. One would think someone who works in healthcare might know how to advocate a little better, but the system is, in my opinion, so broken that some days it all felt impossible.
This is why I'm so happy to be at PLM. We've built this amazing platform that connects patients to others who share similar experiences, and perhaps shed some light to a path if you're feeling lost. I'm glad to be a part of it.
