So sorry you are in nursing home! I hope your family will visit you soon! I am sure they are relieved you are not stuck at home by yourself but you are being cared for daily! All you have to do is push a button for help! Best wishes! I know change is hard to take! Give yourself time! Prayers for your peace of mind!!

I have had MS since 2006. I am no longer able to walk. I have taught myself how to write left-handed. My power chair and the Hoyer lift are now my best friend.  I have made many adaptations to my lifestyle but am still living to the best of my ability! There are many things I miss, like taking a walk in the early morning or late evening, but I find I miss ME the most and find myself in a constant self-challenge to find me.

So a little more about me, a 58-year old woman who got her AA degree in general studies going on for her BA in Journalism (editorial journalism, which I actually started 30 years ago).  Interesting re onset of my quest to find out what the heck was going on as all of a sudden I had major balance loss and a tilt in vision, and then there were some strange instances over past 2 years of "benign vertigo," major bouts of dizziness, pain in my neck (called carotidinia(sp?), major kidney infection with kidney stones lodged in my urethra (and isn't a possible cause of MS a bacteria or viral infection?), loss of use of right hand (was told nerve damage from CTS which I had CTS release surgery in 2002), right drop foot diagnosed in 2001 due to possible back problems (which after many spinal MRI's in 2006 back had minor probs but not major to cause foot drop), which after going to a spine specialist in 2006, he suggested a brain MRI (who would have thought?), which showed 1 lesion on the left paratiel (sp?) cortex over the motor strip (causing the probs on my right side), and then of course, I reauested the LP for confirmation of what I was being told and it came back positive for MS diagnosis.

But wait, go back farther to when I had my first right knee surgery in 1993 and developed post-surgery RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy), and received numerous nerve blocks in '94 to treat RSD, and then a patella realignment in '95, with my last knee surgery in 1998.  Although I recovered from the knee surgeries quite nicely (with little to no limp), all of a sudden I developed this right foot drop in 2001 and went through a major bout of constantly twisting my right ankle.  Was prescribed an AFO brace which I wore off and on for about 3 years.  Then I get married to my best friend in 2003 and noticed in 2005 after major kidney infection with kidney stones that had to be surgically removed, some right leg weakness and dizziness while planting trees in the fall so I decide to pursue finding the cause of the right foot drop and right hand so-called nerve damage and the rest is history. My best guess is that I was having symptoms as far back as 2001 (and maybe I was doing the relapsing-remitting thing - who knows), but MS wasn't even mentioned until 2006 when I experienced major loss of balance with increased walking difficulties.  I still have little use of right hand (have taught myself to write left-handed and use speech recognition software to talk to my computer), have major probs walking and major right foot/leg spasticity, and recently got wheelchair eval with recommendation to get one.  On a positive note, I have no more RSD symptoms in right leg.

The wheelchair thing has basically made me get "off my butt" so to speak regarding research into other possibilities - like LDN which I have become very interested in and it looks like it is a real possibility, as well as getting involved in the MS communities to learn more as well as to provide more awareness.  Who knows, maybe the MS organizations can ultimately use my writing skills when I finally accomplish my life-long goal, despite the challenges MS seems to bring me.

I'm also a mom to 2 wonderful daughters (one is 37 and the other 27) and a grandma to my 37 year-old's 19-year old daughter  and I am so proud of her and my oldest.  It is so hard for them to see their Mom who did everything and could fix anything, not do so many things anymore or fix herself.
