Diagnosed in November of 2009, my breast cancer was stage 0 but grade 3, which was aggressive. I opted for a bilateral mastectomy due to family history. I was offered the option of a lumpectomy (with a 45% prognosis that the cancer would return) and felt with MS and family history, I wanted to be as far down the road to remission as possible, not wanting to wait for the possibility of cancer returning, having to have additional surgeries, and most likely ending up with a mastectomy in the end. At one point, one of my doctors said i would have to go off the inteferon I was on at the time as there was a "possible" link between breast cancer and that particular MS treatment - more mis-information. I was accidentally overdosed with pain meds while recovering in the hospital, causing me unnecessary trauma which still rears its ugly head, 5 years later. The mastectomy and reconstruction have their own set of challenges; the brain trauma from the overdose was an added setback.
