What is ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury?

The anterior cruciate ligament is a structure that helps maintain stability of the knee joint. It is one of the most common injuries to the knee. Less severe injuries may respond to RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and splinting. More severe injuries may require casting or surgical repair.
