What is empty sella syndrome?

The pituitary gland is a small gland located at the base of the brain in a space called 'sella turcica'. When the pituitary gland shrinks or flattens due to filling with spinal fluid it gives the appearance of being empty. This is referred to as empty sella syndrome.
