What is pernicious anemia?

Pernicious anemia is a decrease in red blood cells that occurs when the body cannot properly absorb vitamin B12 from the gastrointestinal tract. It results from the deficiency vitamin B12 and is caused by atrophic gastritis, parietal cell loss, and lack of intrinsic factor.
