What is Niemann-Pick Type B?
Niemann-Pick disease type B is an inherited condition characterized as a deficiency of the acid sphingomyelinase enzyme, which normally breaks down a fatty substance called sphingomyelin. Some characteristics include an enlarged spleen and liver, high cholesterol, and progressive lung involvement.
