What is perineal laceration during childbirth?

The perineum is the area between the vagina and anus that can sustain tears during delivery. The severity of lacerations are categorized as first, second, third or fourth degree and can range from small nicks and abrasions to deep lacerations affecting several pelvic floor muscles.
