What is subacute thyroiditis?

Subacute thyroiditis is an acute inflammatory disease of the thyroid that is thought to be caused by a virus. Lasting for a few weeks to many months, it is characterized by transient thyrotoxicosis and then a return to normal thyroid function in most patients.
