Advice & Tips: Methotrexate works great for me, though I know that's not the case for everyone. I don't have many side-effects, though I admit that the hair loss has been difficult for me emotionally, as my hair used to be very thick and long, and a point of pride for me. The other side-effects I manage by taking MTX right before bed.

Jul 8, 2012 (Started Jun 20, 2012)

  • Effectiveness
    Slight (for psoriasis)
  • Side effects
    Mild (for Overall) (Drowsy, drowsiness)
  • Adherence
    Usually
  • Burden
Not at all hard to take
Dosage: 7.5 mg Weekly
Advice & Tips: Background:I have never taken and immunosuppressant for 13 years that I've had psoriasis only on my elbows and lower legs. My guttate psoriasis all over my back and arms was triggered after a flu shot and he suggested Methotrexate. Notes: By "drowsiness" I mean to say that it made my system feel down. I was in a relaxed mood and didn't feel like doing anything, not necessary dizzy. I saw a little bit improvement--psoriasis on back is less fared, vitiligo from healed psoriasis remains, but definitely is not worse than when I started.

Jul 1, 2009 (Started Jan 05, 2009)

  • Effectiveness
    Moderate (for rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Side effects
Severe (for Overall) (liver failure (acute))
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
    A little hard to take
Dosage: 10 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: This stuff is vicious! One thing I do have to say for it is that I have not had to shave my underarms since I was on it. My leg hair also grows back much more slowly than it used to. It almost killed my liver. My driver's license photo was taken while I was on Methotrexate and everyone who sees the photo comments on how yellow I looked. I did bounce back from the bad effects fairly quickly after stopping the meds.
Cost: $50-99 monthly

Jan 1, 2011 (Started Oct 01, 2010)

  • Effectiveness
    Moderate (for rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Side effects
    Severe (for Overall) (stomach pain)
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
    Very hard to take
Dosage: 30 mg Weekly
Advice & Tips: I took a day of rest because I felt so sick the day I took it. Taking it with food helps and not early in the morning. Usually I felt fine the rest of the week. I did not feel any benifit from it. I do not remember the exact dose.
Cost: < $25 monthly

  • Burden

Jul 17, 2011 (Started Aug 18, 2011)

  • Effectiveness
    Major (for rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Side effects
    Moderate (for Overall)
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
    Somewhat hard to take
Advice & Tips: I am now taking MTX injectable weekly, because of the stomach pain with the pills, but the stomach pain is the same and I haven't had a decrease in symptoms at all. Of course, it's only been 3 days since my first injection. The pills worked great at relieving the joint pain, swelling, stiffness, but I couldn't put up with the stomach issues anymore. I imagine this will take some time, but I just don't want to do it anymore! I want to pretend that I don't have the disease and just take pain medicine..anyone feel that way?
