  • Effectiveness
    Moderate (for major depressive disorder)
  • Side effects
    Mild (for Overall)
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
Not at all hard to take
Dosage: 60 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: After being diagnosed with depression and anxiety my doctor put me on this and I can't praise it enough. I also suffered from bad insomnia and was severely underweight and this tablet was a godsend for those - it made me sleepy and sedated and increased my appetite so I was able to put on weight. I had no sexual side effects, it never made me feel sick and it worked extremely well for my conditions - I stopped having random panic attacks while on it and it kept my depression away. Sadly after 5 years on them they pooped out on me and I developed extreme mood highs and lows so I had to change meds. Withdrawal was manageable but since I stopped I'm averaging about 3 hours of sleep a night due to difficulty sleeping, and it isn't just difficulty getting to sleep but staying asleep too. As I said before I have nothing but good things to say about Mirtazapine, however I was lucky as all the side effects that affected me were positive. I can see why other people can have problems with the constant drowsiness and increased appetite/weight gain, but for an anxious under-eating insomniac for me it was ideal.

Feb 16, 2011 (Started Dec 15, 1999)

  • Effectiveness
    Moderate (for bipolar disorder)
  • Side effects
Moderate (for Overall) (urinary retention, morning sleepiness if taken too late in the evening)
  • Adherence
    Sometimes
  • Burden
    Very hard to take
Dosage: 30 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: This drug had the effect of making it very difficult to wake up in the morning to get to work. When I was depressed, it was very effective and my body adjusted to the sedation effects. As my depression lifted, I experienced more and more difficulty in waking up. Also, it tended to have the effect of urinary retention. A plus when incontinence becomes an issue.
Cost: < $25 monthly
Side effects: urinary retention, morning sleepiness if taken too late in the evening

Nov 1, 2009 (Started Sep 01, 2009)

  • Effectiveness
    None (for Tourette syndrome)
  • Side effects
    Mild (for Overall)
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
Not at all hard to take
Dosage: 45 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: MISDIAGNOSED WITH TOURETTE SYNDROME BY AN RXHAPPY DOCTOR. This was prescribed when Trazodone gave me headaches so bad they made me vomit. When my Narcolepsy came about my doctor saw how tired I was, assumed my sleep wasn't restful, & put me on sleeping pills while refusing to give me a polysomnography/MSLT. Remeron was markedly better than Trazodone but for obvious reasons only made my fatigue worlds worse, although I did enjoy the lucid dreams. Also, take the spontaneous orgasm warning seriously.

Nov 1, 2009 (Started Sep 15, 2009)

  • Effectiveness
    None (for sleeplessness)
  • Side effects
    Mild (for Overall)
  • Adherence
    Never taken as prescribed
  • Burden
Not at all hard to take
Dosage: 15 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: I took it as prescribed, but it had no effect on helping me sleep. The pain still kept waking me up every half hour or so to turn onto a new position, fall asleep, then wake up again & again to do the same til about 5 am when I finally fell asleep for about 3 hrs of solid sleep, only to wake up again in restless pain, and just give up for the day.

Mar 30, 2010 (Started Jun 23, 2009)

  • Effectiveness
    None (for obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Effectiveness
    None (for depressed mood)
  • Side effects
    Moderate (for Overall) (fatigue)
  • Adherence
    Always
  • Burden
    Very hard to take
Dosage: 15 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: Hopefully they changed this, but the way the REMERON SOL TABS were packaged (some type of blister pack) made them nearly impossible to open! It was very difficult and required extreme dexterity. REMERON is a strange drug. The more you take, the LESS severe the fatigue side-effect becomes. Thus, if one were to use REMERON as a sleep-aid, a doctor may likely prescribe only 15mg nightly. Higher doses mean less fatigue. having said that, I was surprised by how much energy I had when I went off the drug completly
