This drug is also used to treat and elevate the mood particulary in mild/severe bipolar disorder. Therefor this has to be considered when decreasing the drug because the clients epilepsy has stabilized enough to warrant a reduction in anti-convulsive therapy.

Apert from the wheiht gain which is managed with a balanced diet I do find my mental health has improved somewhat as well. Perhaps because of the impact it has in my epilepsy control perhaps not as I have read it is used in mental health treatment as well.

I was previously prescribed this for Bipolar Disorder but seeing as the mood swings have continued and are more rapid than usual bipolar I am now wondering whether it is actually the CFS/MS/FMS causing the swings. Chicken or the egg...

I put on between 50 and 60 pounds while on Depakote ER, and lost my desire to work out, since I was a walking Zombie. In addition I don't feel that it helped me very much with mood swings, as I still had them, and would snap at people such as coworkers, friends, bosses, etc. Coming off Depakote was extremely difficult. A few weeks into tapering off, I out of nowhere became extremely dizzy at work and fell down. To stand up I had to hold on to the counters and get myself to a table. After this I started having bad muscle pain and tightness. In addition, my mood swings were actually worse than before. I have found lamictal to be a much better functioning medication, with very little side affects.
