This drug is also used to treat and elevate the mood particulary in mild/severe bipolar disorder. Therefor this has to be considered when decreasing the drug because the clients epilepsy has stabilized enough to warrant a reduction in anti-convulsive therapy.

Apert from the wheiht gain which is managed with a balanced diet I do find my mental health has improved somewhat as well. Perhaps because of the impact it has in my epilepsy control perhaps not as I have read it is used in mental health treatment as well.

I have taken this medicine, with the exception of about a year, since 1991, and have not had any grand mal seizures. I have had mild aural seizure activity, but not bad enough to warrant a visit to the doctors. It has been 20 years without a grand mal seizure for me, and I think that is a big accomplishment compared to how I did before I started taking Depakote.

Worked for me as a kid when having petit mal seizures. As an adult with grand mal seizure, I was in a lot of pain on this medication and had to stop taking it.

Depakote controlled my seizures most of the time, but has not completely done so. The seizures always come back about a year or two after adjusting my dosage. The side effects for me are: weight gain, breast enlargement, tremors, depression, indecisiveness or what is termed "cloudy thinking" on the label... Positive effects were the relaxing effect of this medicine. It calmed me down emotionally. Depakote has made daily life easier but I am ready for a new medicine, as I am developing an immunity to it.
