Advice & Tips
Like other meds I've taken and tried, this worked WONDERS at first, only to have the positive effects taper off over the next three months. I can't tell you how well it works, as my brain fog is still bad - it keeps me from working as a computer tech and makes life miserable for me. My doc demands that I stay on this... Alzheimer's runs in my family, so maybe he has other reasons as well.

Advice & Tips
increased mental alertness, less fatigue than normal, slight decline in fvc [2%]. initial effects similar to too much caffeine but only lasts 48hrs. currently on 10mg in am, 20mg in pm with no effect on sleeping on cpap - actually, sleeping better. dietary change around the same time to increase protein intake via drink supplements and eating more. much less fatigue but still in a chair most of the time. can still just get up and walk flat and level with a stick a little way - surprised because last week i thought it was all over for walking. fascics still there but not so noticeable.

non pbs script is $103 per 28 tabs of 20mg. will take 10mg for 1 week and 20mg thereafter. local gp has offered to document condition changes for the record. will do bloods early dec 2010 as a baseline. this is the start evaluation, and will continue regularly - each week at least.

Advice & Tips
Has helped tremendously with my memory problems so far. I don't forget appointments or deadlines at work. I still have some problems with word recall, but even that has improved some.

Advice & Tips
--titrate dose up slowly, starting at 5mg for 3-15 days before going up to 10mg. Acute side effects, such as "brain fog", confusion, memory loss, body aches, ect....are at their worst for the first 2-4 days after starting new/raising dose. Apparently, most people report the side effects to become unbothersome at 1-2 weeks, and after 4 weeks, side effects such as memory loss/brain fog/confusion are completely gone. After 2-4 weeks, an improvement (as opposed to a decrease) in attention, cognition, and memory abilities is commonly noticed --- hence, Memantine's clinical benefit in Alzheimer's disease patients. Memantine is not an "Alzheimers Disease Medication/Drug". It is a mixed (non-selective) NMDA, 5-HT3, and Nicotinic Acetylcholine receptor antagonist. These three mechanisms significantly modulate attention, memory, cognition, and many other aspects of mental function....the use of Memantine in Alzheimers disease is merely due to the discovery that chronic Memantine improves memory in such patients. Other uses of Memantine include: preventing Amphetamine/Opiate tolerance, OCD/Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, ADD/ADHD, and others.

Advice & Tips
Very easy to take, no adverse side effects. It didn't cause nausea like Aricept did for several weeks (it did subside). My neurologist found some info on possible adverse indications from taking it and encouraged me to stop so I did reluctantly.
