While yoga of any type will differ from teacher to teacher my Ashtanga yoga teacher is wonderful at making it a good workout but easy enough that you dont feel like you were intensely working out.
Usually do this for a friday noon session and now and again do the monday noon session.
Downward Facing Dog for longer is common in the Ashtanga series so I have developed a lot of strength in my shoulders from this and the Vinyasa classes.
A beginner class should be capable for anyone that has normal range of motion and a good heart.
