Advice & Tips
I practice meditation alongside deep breathing almost every time I have an attack of pain. I also try to add more sessions into my day when I remember, feel the need or am prompted in some other way. Benefits are holistic - I feel relaxed, energised and soothed physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This helps me to manage the neuralgia symptoms more effectively by feeling powerful instead of powerless against the pain. It also reminds me that my symptoms and causes are not only physical but have a mental, emotional and spiritual root too. Healing focused on all these levels means I feel better sooner and for longer, even when pain attacks are intense and frequent. Finding the time is up to me as it can be 1 minute or much longer according to my needs, schedule, motivation and energy levels.

Advice & Tips
I know that meditation helps me - body scan and other types. I seem to be skimping on this and not sure why. The results are my emotions are less stable, I have a sharper temper and get sad easily. I know I need to do this more and don't know why I am not except that I have nowhere to lie down except my bed so doing it during the day means I must lock up my parrots and that whole process gets too big so I just skip it. I need to do this as not doing it has immediate problems and I suspect it has long-term problems that I'm not able to notice yet. One is that it is harder to do - my mental gymnastics are more difficult to settle down. My pain is higher, and all my symptoms are worse when I skimp and don't do this at least 5 times a week if not more.

Advice & Tips
Cd player broke so I didn't do this for a few weeks. Re-started last week and do 3-6Xweek. sometimes fall asleep, but the sleep feels good. do it daytime mid day usually. has motivated me to use other CDs for guided imagery/medit that I own and new ones (eg Pert's) due to + feeling about the practice. helps keep my center calmer. Burden is the act of preparing space on sofa, bringing CD player to near me, fixing up parrots with food etc to keep them calm - and not just taking a nap instead.

Advice & Tips
Taking the time to meditate (that is the hard part-taking the time) is one of the smartest things I ever did (like doing reiki). I only spend 10 to 20 minutes meditating and it brings such peace.

Spaced out

Advice & Tips
I was starting to "space out" too much after each meditation session - having accidents in the kitchen for example - worrying! So then I realized that it was the meditation AGAIN! This happens regularly after about 4-6 weeks of meditation & then I have to stop - oh brother, when will I learn my lesson & just leave it alone?!

Advice & Tips
I had been using a variation of TM designed by a former teacher however I decided that in order to be sure that I would receive the benefits as demonstrated by study results that I should really stick with the original technique so I have just gone back to that.

Advice & Tips
As I am reduced to not being able to actually "do" anything once again I find that at least I can "do" meditation & I am more & more enjoying & looking forward to it in my day - I meditate a la TM-style that is for 20 mins twice per day - I think it definitely makes my mood more steady & even & maybe even improves my sense of humor too!

Advice & Tips
I had to back off the amount of time I was meditating each day as I was starting to experience "dissociation" - that is, I was spacing out a bit & losing short term memory. However, I noticed after 6 months of meditation that I hadn't fallen into any of the desperate, depressive funks as I had previously averaging about once every 3 months but I did have a really bad one last week which caused me to try cutting my wrist.

Advice & Tips
As meditation is not prescribed but is a chosen activity, some of the questions didn't really apply, however, I couldn't save this and leave the others unanswered!! I worked with meditation for a couple of years. It was wonderful and I could totally forget my Parkinson's. I could easily go into the meditative state but after a while I found that I was thinking about the meditating too much and it was too easy to allow myself to slip into this state instead of dealing with real life. Just because something is possible or easy to do, doesn't mean that it's necessarily appropriate. It is important to remember that you meditate to live, not live to meditate. It's not something to take lightly or to delve into too deeply without having a really good teacher who is working with you on a regular basis. I find that I have to stop meditating from time to time because it can be almost addictive. That said, if you have both feet firmly planted on the ground and have someone working with you, it can be a wonderful support!

Advice & Tips
Breath, insight, or Vipassana meditation are all excellent tools for getting to know your moods and your body better. It has made me so much more aware of myself that I can now identify episodes much easier before they balloon out of control. It is probably the second most valuable part of my treatment, next to medication.

Advice & Tips
I used Jon Kabot-Zinn's "The Mindful Way Through Depression" (book and CD) and found amazing results. I have meditated for 30 years, but until Dr. Kabot-Zinn's calm voice "walking me through" the meditation process, inked with his program, I never felt committed to it nor could I see any improvements over time. Now I do -- meditation has become a standard part of my morning, and it helps me through the winter "blahs" (SADD) along with my SADD light, and keeps me focused the rest of the year. And calm. Now it is a wonderful treat every morning -- highly recommended.
