I was advised to take 1000mg of Metformin (2x daily). Both are required to take with food. I can't take the first pill in the morning because that's when I take my thyroid medication, which must be taken on it's own with no food. If I take the first Metformin at lunch time, then I have to take the second near dinner or bed time; they're taken so closely together that it upsets my stomach most of the time.

I have found that taking 2 tablets at the same time does not work as well as taking 1 tablet at a time but slightly more frequently. My original dosage was 2 at each meal if I felt I needed them and many times I skipped one at lunch for a total of 5/day but... I ended up with diarrhea much of the time - a side effect that worked fine when I was trying to lose weight but was not once I got to my desired weight. I also noted that my blood-sugar was always high (above 8) in the morning and I typically got up to urinate some time during the night most nights. I cut back to 1 per meal and added an extra one at bed time with a small snack. My diarrhea all but stopped and I sleep through the night most nights.

I got marginal results controlling my blood sugar after building up to the maximum dose and the side effect of diarrhea made it not worth taking.
