Advice & Tips
No matter how inexperienced or experienced the psychiatrist you choose is, don't ne afraid to voice your opinion or question his diagnosis. Sometimes it's good to get a few different opinions, and always question about the medication he's prescribing you, especially if it's new. And don't be afraid to tell the truth.

Advice & Tips
Find someone who has somebody on call at all times to deal with crises instead of calling 911 all the time. (which I don't do anyway) We don't have a place to go where I live for inpatient treatment

Advice & Tips
My therapy has been extremely helpful to help me to understand what it means to be bipolar II, and how to live with it. He has helped me to understand how my mood swings affect my point of view, and has given me great advice on how to help keep the mood swings more in check, in addition to being on the correct medication. It has been difficult to follow some of the advice given, such as trying to regulate sleep, as some nights I sleep a lot and others I sleep very little. And I have had a hard time being social or in groups, as I am recommended to go to aa meetings, and become more involved in society. Both of us have recently become aware how much of my current problem has been anxiety and panic, and it is most likely due to being on the wrong medication. He has helped me work through all this, and now I find myself more aware of myself and my moods. I have been learning through him along with my medication that I can live with my symptoms and can actually do well, once I contain the symptoms medically, and learn to understand myself otherwise. I have tried to treat my bipolar disorder only by going to a psychiatrist, and being on medication and the result was being over medicated, and not improving. Good treatment of bipolar disorder incorporates both medication and therapy.
