  • Perceived effectiveness for Depressed mood: Major
  • Perceived effectiveness for Nerve pain (neuralgia): Moderate
  • Side Effects: Moderate
  • Adherence: Always
  • Burden: Not at all
Dosage: 50 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: When I first began this medication it would help me sleep or rather help me feel sleepy. It no longer does that for me, even after the increase. I know it has helped my depression, I was on the verge of suicide before the increase. Now I am more positive and I feel better, if only it would help me sleep. The dry mouth is constant, I have become accustomed to it, I keep hard candy around, to me it helps with stimulating saliva.
Cost: < $25 monthly
Side effects: Mouth sores (ulcers), Grogginess, Dry mouth (xerostomia)

  • Perceived effectiveness for Nerve pain (neuralgia): Moderate
  • Side Effects: Mild
  • Adherence: Always
  • Burden: Not at all
Dosage: 10 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: When I first started the medication I had horrible dry mouth. I solved it by chewing gum, it seemed to stimulate the saliva. I am also drinking half a pot of coffe to wake up in the morning, which I don't really care to do, but I have to work so I do what I have to do. Also I am taking the generic which I get at walmart because of the $4 dollar deal which this medicine actually cost me $3.83 a month!

Advice & Tips: I gave it up because of weight gain and I was pre diabetic and needed to reset my priorities. It's great to be awake in the morning but the pain level I'm experiencing has gone up. I'd never go back on it because of the side effects especially the fatigue .

  • Perceived effectiveness for Depressed mood: None
  • Side Effects: Severe
  • Adherence: Always
  • Burden: Not at all
Dosage: 10 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: I experienced depression when I titrated up to 200 mg on the Lamictal XR which made me pretty useless and wasn't going away so I called my doctor and asked him for some Zoloft which worked wonders for me in the past. Imagine my surprise when he instead called in a precription for the generic form of Elavil. AWFUL medication!!! Worsened my depression, constant dry mouth, made me want to sleep all the time, caused me to be angry all the time. Caused me to have a couple of myoclonic seizures; that was enough for me. Titrated myself off the medicine. Did some research on it; found out that the tricyclic antidepressants actually tend to have more probability of causing seizures than do the SSRI's. The neurologist is probably going to be upset I took myself off the medicine, but I'd rather be depressed than live with the side effects of Elavil. Advice to anyone who is depressed and wants to try a med to control it--stay away from this drug. It seems to have a great deal of side effects, takes WEEKS to kick in, and can induce seizures even in people who don't have epilepsy. If I still feel this way when I see the doctor next month, I'll be asking for some Zoloft or other anti-depressant with less evil side effects!
Cost: < $25 monthly
Side effects: Nausea and vomiting, Heavy sweating anytime, day or night, Excessive dry mouth (xerostomia) at night, Anger, Increased or worsened depression, Feeling out of it, Alternating constipation and diarrhea, Headaches, Dizziness upon moving, Drowsiness

  • Perceived effectiveness for Pain: Slight
  • Side Effects: Moderate
  • Adherence: Always
  • Burden: Not at all
Dosage: 30 mg Daily
Advice & Tips: I've had problems with neuropathic pain for the last 10 years or so. I took neurontin for a long time until the maximum daily dose (3000 mg in divided doses, I think) just wasn't cutting it for me. After neurontin, Lyrica worked for maybe 6 months, and then I went through a series of anticonvulsants and tricyclics until I finally got to a combination that worked: Cymbalta + amitriptyline. That held for maybe four years, when it started becoming less effective. Also, I've started having serious problems with constipation, which amitriptyline can exacerbate. So I'm back to just Cymbalta and waiting to see what the neurologist at the pain clinic will suggest when I see him.
