Tooth sensitivity occurs when dentin (middle layer) of a tooth is exposed. Dentin is covered by enamel above the gumline and is made up of tiny openings called tubules. Inside each tubule lies a nerve branch. When the nerves are affected by hot/cold temperature or pressure, this causes sensitivity.
