I am outgoing (still) & active (was) husband of awesome lady & father of 2 helpful children. First leg strength issues were on racquetball court in late 2006. 2 specialists later, on 8/17/2007, PMA was confirmed diagnosis. Stopped driving ( hand controls) in february 2012 and retired after 31 years at same firm due to PMA (weakening arms/wrists) end of march 2012. I no longer walk at all (power chair) & weakness is spreading to certain muscles in arms.
But, I keep on keepin on - to steal a line from John Mayer, "I'm bigger than my body"!
Aside from the obvious negative aspects, The disease has affected me positively in many ways. I have learned patience and humility. I have learned to "stop and smell the roses" so to speak, which has allowed me to notice the small but meaningful wonders of daily life and more importantly, to observe the basic inherent goodness in others.
I have learned to adapt and be resourceful as diseased has progressed. Though it has come with some monetary expense, I can truly say, that 6 years in, I am very comfortable and happy with my environment and caregiving team- family included!!!
