Hello! My name is Shannon. I am a single mother of one 16 year old boy. I become less tolerant - especially of the disrespect I get from him, which makes me sad.. But I try my best... I know he still does not understand what the MS does to me (add in the degenerative disc disease in my back) and this can make our communications difficult.
I have been unemployed for more than two years and am trying very hard to get back to working, and at the same time applying for SSDI (on 4th appeal and waiting for the ALJ hearing) because my county assistance for cash is going to be ending soon.
I had many relapses in my early years after diagnosis, but not any in the last 5 years. Stress brings many of them on, as well as cold weather (affects my speech ability) and high dewpoints (fatigues me instantly and makes me weak)... It still makes me wonder why I am living in MN - this is one of the coldest places in the winter and the has outrageous humidity in the summer... But eventually, I will live in AZ - maybe when my son graduates or by 10 years after that.... but my family and friends are here - and they are my support system. I need them... which is one reason why I moved back home to MN.
I have been out of work since June of 2008 - unable to find a position that will fit my physical capabilities (the ortho who gave me the degenerative disc disease Dx said I need a fusion - but I can still work as long as it is in a sedentary position with minimal lifitng bending, squatting, reaching, twisting, turning, stretching and standing.... HAHAHA... I wanted to ask him if he had looked in the paper or online for jobs lately that do not require these things... But I still look... I am in the 3rd application for Social Security disability - and according to my regular physician, I am only able to work part time. I have a rep handling this application - 3rd time's a charm, right? (Keeping my fingers crossed!!!) As of Sept 2010, I got rid of the "rep" and hired an actual attorney- I am now waiting for the ALJ hearing date to be assigned to a judge.
I had found a part time job that made me have to finally say the words "I can't" because there was no way I was going to keep up with the walking speed the position required. Shortly after, I had my ALJ hearing... and GOT APPROVED!!!! YAY!!!
