I am a 53 yo mother of 3, grandmother of 3. Married to the same man for 32 years. Have a BS in physics and a MS in Industrial Engineering. Last employeed as a Software Systems Support Engineer in 2002. Lost my ability to speak in a clear, consise, timely manner as well as my typing skills. The thoughts are there but getting them out is very difficult. I am also one of the 1% of people to whom DBS increased the progression of my PD symptems.
It has been 5 yrs since I entered the above, great things have happened to me esp. in the last year. I have a new neuro who has made me much better
I had DBS surgery in 2001 and expected alot and was severely disappointed. My walking got worse with every adjustment. I was using untested levels of requip (4 8mg of RequipXL daily) and had added sinemet and amantadine. I had given up hope. Then I met a Dr. at the local parkinson's disease support group meeting and I told him my story. He said alot had changed since 2001 and to come see what he could do. Well at the time I was driving to Houston about a 4hr. drive one way where my neuro.had just left the practice so I was looking to change Drs anyway. He was in N. Austin and it would still be an hours drive but far better I currently had. It took about 5 months to get an appointment but was well worth the wait. My first appt. he commented that my condition was totally unacceptable and worked with my DBS settings for over an hour(during his lunch time), finally he said lets try turning your right side off. I hadn't had tremors on the right just dyskenesia and freezing up. When he turned it off it was like he lifted a huge weight off of me and I could move again. I still have some problems but feel better than I have in 5 yrs.
