Im a 34 year old, obese female. Mother of 3. Wife of 1. :)
I am unemployed, and have been on Social Security for 4 years, due to my severe pain, and other mental health issues.
I was told i probably had Fibromyalgia 8 years ago. My symptoms probably started before, but the day i noticed the biggest change was when i started to get major pain in my body. Mainly my back to start with. I tried all kinds of over the counter medication, and nothing worked to ease the pain. It was so severe i was curled up in a ball all day, and no matter what position. I cried all day that day, and finally went to the ER to get a shot for the pain.
A few days later i went to my Doctor, and after reading my symptoms, and all the other things that had been wrong with me before that, he told me i may have Fibromyalgia. He sent me to another doctor, and after an extensive exam..this doctor also told me this is what it could be. they wanted to send me to a specialist, but my insurance would not cover that.
My mother had been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia just a few years before this happened to me. I knew that she had seen specialists and they had done a number of other tests on her to reach a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. Though i was unable to get these tests, i have just come to understand that this is probably what i am living with.
The first medication they put me on to help my pain was Vioxx. My mother had also been on Vioxx, and had suffered a mini stroke. She never followed up on whether it was due to the medication or not. The Vioxx helped alot, until they took it off the market, and i was left in pain once again daily.
I have learned to cope with the pain today, and have been on many different types of medications, including Vicodin, Ibuprofen 800, and Celebrex. (These are the medications my insurance did approve.) I have recently stopped taking the Celebrex due to some complications i was having with it, and am now trying to manage my pain with Extra Strength Tylenol.
Though i have not had a really bad episode in many years, i still struggle with day to day function since the day this started. I can no longer stand for any longer than a few minutes at a time. My arms dont work like they used to. They dont have any strength in them anymore, and my fingers even hurt when i use the keyboard on this computer for too long. There is just a number of things that i have been unable to do since this started. Including lose wieght. I know i am supposed to exercise through the pain, but i just cant get myself to suffer through it. for the past 5 years it has just gotten worse and i have gained alot of wieght.
I also have osteoarthritis in my ankle bone due to an injury when i was 16, and that has caused alot of my wieght gain too, because i havent been able to walk properly.
