- I think this started with a herniated disk in 2002, My back pain never went completely away no matter what treatments I tried. I was diagnosed with celiac disease the same year. In the next five years 2 family members died suddenly and I was the only person taking care of my mother, who was chronically ill. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia after my mother's death. I think it was my response to prolonged stress and pain that set this off. I still work full time as an elementary teacher. I walk three times a week and swim in a warm pool three times a week.
