All it takes is $25, a saliva sample and a willingness to participate.
Parkinson's is a complex disease with both genetic and environmental components. By participating in this initiative, you'll be joining an unprecedented effort to understand how the two work and interact. Participants will have their DNA analyzed and can answer online surveys about themselves and their experience with Parkinson's. By comparing the genetic and health information, we may be able to make discoveries regarding genetic and environmental factors in Parkinson’s disease, the disease’s symptoms and progression, as well as the varied effectiveness of different treatments.
Just a few years ago, genes were thought to have little influence on Parkinson's disease. But now a growing number of Parkinson's-causing mutations are being discovered. We think we can learn even more with the help of 10,000 people willing to share their experience.
Unlike a single research study or clinical trial, the 23andMe Parkinson's Community is long term, and can evolve over time. You'll have a chance to take more surveys as new research questions come to light. Best of all, we'll keep you posted about the progress of this research as it moves ahead.
Through a private and secure online account, you can gain deeper insights into what your DNA reveals about your personal health, ancestry and inherited traits. Look at as much, or as little, as you choose.
Thanks to the generosity of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe is able to offer its Personal Genome Service™ to members of the 23andMe Parkinson's Community for a tiny fraction of its retail cost. Click here to read a letter from Sergey Brin explaining his interest in this project.
