What is Probenecid?

Probenecid is a uricosuric agent that prevents increased levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia) when associated with gout or gouty arthritis. It is also to prolong the level of certain types of antibiotics in the blood (penicllins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics).
