Back from a week in Florida. He showed more signs of being overwhelmed by the long days and activities than last time. Granted, he displays this just with being quiet, humming to himself, and sucking his fingers. He was clearly very tired from the long days, but he/we still had a great time. Lots of good moments. Just wish our days having fun weren't quite as long. Perhaps we try to fit to much into the trip.

Grumpy day all day yesterday. His little sister has pink eye. Hope he's not getting sick. Today he has neuro testing, so we're hoping he has a good day.

Dropped down to just three days per week after school. Now that he's in K, I'm not really counting any of his day at school as ABA, though data is being collected by his ABA-trained aide.

This marked a return to good scores. Last Vineland we took rated way low. We looked back at each question and decided we were too hard on him. We weren't really answering in the spirit of the questions. This time, my wife took the test by herself (she's usually hardest on him). She compared him to his sisters rather than to perfection. As a result, the scores are back where they were in previous Vinelands. The Motor Skills scoring is way off, though. My wife read back her answers and also agrees that they answers really should have been different.

I decided to list this as my primary condition. My son's diagnosis is actually PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified), which is an autism spectrum disorder. However, there are fewer PDD-NOS patients, so this will just get me listed better. Ideally, PDD-NOS would just be a "Type" of Autism, not a whole separate thing.

I wouldn't call something "appropriate" if it removes services that are well-deserved and needed, so I'm going to have to see how it plays out. For our specific case, we're getting to the point where the types of services we need are not typically going to be covered by insurance anyway. But if we have millions of kids with Aspergers suddenly losing their services, there are going to huge public health implications in the future.

We were at a birthday party on Sunday night when he said he had to go to the bathroom. He had to rush there and it was horrendous diarrhea like I haven't seen in a long time. He was also up in the night screaming in pain from gas pains and eventually threw up once.

In the morning, he was fine. He stayed home from school but showed no ill effects.

Of course, we started wondering if it was because he recently started a little bit of rice flour in his diet. I don't think that's likely as it was probably just a stomach bug.

As I said in my treatment evaluation, yesterday—at 5 1/2 years old—our son had rice for the first time. For that reason, I'm considering us off the SCD. We introduced potatoes a while back (which aren't SCD legal), too. He handled those well. We'll monitor the rice. I can't say enough about the SCD. This, along with the ABA therapy, dramatically changed the course of our son's life.
