I have always had numerous health problems including pneumothoraxes(lung collapses), joint problems, skin problems(scars stretching, poor wound healing, infections, skin tearing from stitches and at incision sites) and they finally found out it was Ehlers Danlos Dyndrome after one of my orthapedic surgeons suggested it after numerous joint surgeries and sent me for genetic testing. Which came out positive..obviously hehe. This affects every part of my body, has caused more life threatening situations and admissions to the ICU than I can count, and causes chronic pain. I even have problems with my heart because of it. Almost all of my lung collapses have been caused by something as small as being sick and coughing or vomiting because their so fragile. The lung surgeries and chest tubes have been more painful than every one of my joint surgeries put together! I wouldnt suggest it...at ALL! If you have healthy lungs, take care of them!!!! I almost had to get my left arm and left breast amputated because of an infection i got from an IV at the hospital called Necrotizing Fasciitis. They did a surgery called a fasciotomy instead and they cut my entire arm open with four incisions and debrided it. The bacteria released this gas that caused my entire arm to blow up like a balloon. Gas produced by the pathogen extensively dissected the subcutaneous fat and fascia of my left arm and spread to my face, neck, back, and thoracic wall and penetrated the soft tissue bordering my sternum, resulting in a pneumomediastinum. The next day I had my first pneumothorax which then turned into a bilateral pneumothorax. And get this! I got the IV when i was taken to the ER by ambulance for a grand mal seizure but because of my poor immune system and wound healing it got infected with the Necro. fasciitis!
Thats just one example of how my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome makes the many medical problems I have worse. A pneumo from a cough, a ruptured quadricep tendon and shattered patella from a small slip, numerous infections from surgeries and injuries, adislocated shoulder from pulling a door open, etc. the seizures+Ehlers Danlos Syndrome= Disaster!
I can go on and on about all the surgeries, injuries, and health problems that are caused by my EDS but my backs killing me! I would love to help anyone who needs it and to hear any advice or hear from people with similar situations or medical problems. Good Luck!
