Bipolar type II depression is debilitating as cancer and often has a higher mortality. The difference is that depression is seen as weakness of character or failure of the will. Observe:
Job interview (cancer):
Interviewer: I see you were out of work for a year. What were you doing?
Applicant: I was fighting non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I was treated with radiation and chemo and have been in remission for two years.
Interviewer: You are so brave.
Job Interview (depression):
Interviewer: I see you were out of work for a year. What were you doing?
Applicant: I was severely depressed. I was briefly hospitalized and then lived with my parents until I got better.
Interviewer: I see you were out of work for a year. What were you doing?

Social Situation (depression):
Attractive Person: So what do you do?
Depression: Well, I've been unemployed for the past year.
Attractive Person: Oh.
Depressio: You see, I've been depressed.
Attractive Person: That must be hard. Could you excuse me?
Social Situation (cancer):
Attractive Person: So what do you do?
Cancer Survivor: Well, I've been unemployed for the past year.
Attractive Person: Oh.
Cancer Survivor: You see, I've had cancer.
Attractive Person: You are so brave.
Social Situation (depression):
Attractive Person: So what do you do?
Depression: Well, I've been unemployed for the past year.
Attractive Person: Oh.
Depressio: You see, I've been depressed.
