Male, age: 49. I was accepted on the kidney xplant wait list July 2008 and received xplant Feb. 2010. Wegener's Granulomatosis, diagnosed in 4/99, is the underlying disease that caused my kidney failure. I was on peritoneal dialysis from Feb. '08 until xplant in Feb '10. I worked full time throughout the dialysis. Post transplant: I began work half time from home (computer work) @ 1.5 months and returned to full time work at 2.5 months. Creatinine ranging from 1.4 to 2.8 at one year post transplant. Now @ 2.2. BK virus on-set 7/10, last test = 13k copies, after peaking @ 95k copies.
In a word: tough road. Ups & downs of kidney x-plant testing, hypertension control, fatigue, depressing creatinine levels, BK virus, meds side-effects and the mental toll that all the uncertainty that comes with all this while working full time, maintaining a marriage & some semblence of a family life. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to be here and I know it could be far worse, but at one year post kidney transplant, I'd be lying if I did not say that it is a tough road.
