What is Zidovudine (AZT/ZDV/Azidothymidine)?

Zidovudine, also known as AZT, ZDV and azidothymidine, is an antiretroviral agent used for treatment of HIV infection in combination with at least two other antiretroviral agents. As a monotherapy it is used for the prevention of maternal/fetal HIV transmission.
