What is Diphtheria?

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the nose and throat. Caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, the disease can cause blocked air passages, skin infections and lesions. Left untreated, bacterial toxins can spread through the bloodstream to other vital organs.
